Subway

Illustrated by Karen Katz
a rush of air

a car is there

hop, hop, hop

on the subway!

Come along for the ride as a little girl and her mother hop on the subway.  From spinning turnstiles and musicians performing on the platforms to people hopping off and on and lights flashing past in the tunnels, the sights and sounds of the subway have an energy all their own.  Anastasia Suen's sprightly text and Karen Katz's brightly colored patterns and lively perspectives combine for a pitch perfect celebration of an underground train ride, where the hustle and bustle is only part of the fun.

Anastasia Suen, author of Picture Writing (Writer's Digest Books, 2003) and more than 60 books for children, cotaught children’s literature at the University of North Texas. She currently teaches the Story Structure Workshop at Southern Methodist University and children's writing workshops online. Suen talks about books and writes with children and adults at schools, libraries, bookstores, book festivals, and conferences. A credentialed elementary school teacher, she is on the Reading Advisory Board for the Rosen Publishing Group and has worked as a poetry consultant for Sadlier-Oxford. A former director of Seminars in Children's Literature and advisor for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Suen is a cofounder of the Writers Roundtable Conference. She is on the Children's Book Council Children's Book Authors and Illustrators List and the "Great Children's Poets" List. View titles by Anastasia Suen
Karen Katz has always been making something: quilts, costumes, prints, sculpture, painting, collage, and book illustrations. While attending the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and Rome, Italy, she became interested in folk art, Indian miniatures, Shaker art, and Mexican art. After graduating, she went on to the Yale Graduate School of Art and Architecture where she fell in love with Chagall, Matisse, and Grandma Moses. Her love of folk art and children’s art has influenced all her children’s books. Before doing children’s books full-time, she created costumes for a magician (Doug Henning), taught college, and illustrated and designed for over 50 publishers. After she and her husband adopted their daughter from Guatemala, she began to devote herself full-time to her love of creating children’s books. She is the author and illustrator of over 45 children’s books and has won numerous awards. Her baby board books have sold over 3 million copies and her multicultural picture books can be found in many schools and libraries. She has created a line of interactive baby toys with Small World Toys. Ms. Katz has lives in Manhattan and upstate New York. View titles by Karen Katz
