Dr Dean Lomax is an internationally recognised multi-award-winning palaeontologist, author and TV presenter. His passion for palaeontology stems from a childhood fascination with everything dinosaur, but his journey into palaeontology was an unconventional one. Dean did not get the grades or have the finances for university. Instead, at age 18, he sold his possessions to fund a trip to excavate dinosaurs in America, and then immersed himself in research and writing scientific papers and books. He never did an undergraduate degree, but instead dived into a Master's and then a PhD. Today, he is recognised as a leading authority on ichthyosaurs – a giant sea dragon from the Mesozoic Era – leads excavations across the globe unearthing dinosaurs and ancient reptiles, is responsible for discovering and naming 10 new species and is a published author.
