Translanguaging is a communicative practice of bilinguals and multilinguals, that is, it is a practice whereby bilinguals and multilinguals use their entire linguistic repertoire to communicate and make meaning
(García, 2009; García, Ibarra Johnson, & Seltzer, 2017)
It is through that lens that we have partnered with teacher educators and bilingual education experts, Drs. Luz Yadira Herrera and Carla España to create the Translanguaging Collections: Affirming Bilingual and Multilingual Learners for Kindergarten through 12th grade.
The Translanguaging Collections grew out of Carla and Luz’s love for children’s literature, teachers that celebrate their students, and honoring the ways that children navigate their expanding language repertoires. The collections carefully consider how we are validating and supporting bilingualism and multilingualism in our learning communities. Each of the six themes and accompanying texts invite students to use their own experiences and languages to make connections and deepen their engagement with texts and people in their lives.
PRH Education Translanguaging Collections are framed through a critical bilingual literacies approach (España & Herrera, 2020) that consists of four guiding principles:
-
-
ongoing self-reflection on our ideas around language
-
unlearning harmful language hierarchies
-
examining the world through a lens that shows how literacy, language, and power intersects
-
celebrating children and youths’ dynamic use of language, or translanguaging.
-
Learn how the PRH Education Translanguaging Collections can be used as an entry point in the dynamic ways we study language across children’s and young adult literature and how it can be applied as a teaching method.
Listen to Drs. Luz Yadira Herrera and Carla España discuss their personal journey to translanguaging and their goal to bring stories with more linguistic and cultural diversity into the classroom.
