Martin W. Sandler has written over seventy books for children and adults, including the National Book Award–winning 1919: The Year That Changed America and the YALSA Nonfiction finalists The Whydah: A Pirate Ship Feared, Wrecked, and Found and Imprisoned. He has also worked as a documentary producer and was nominated for multiple Emmys for writing for television. His most recent title, Shipwrecked!, was named a 2024 Sibert Honor Book and ALSC Notable Book.
